How to change the email address linked to Binance? Secure re-binding process

The standard process for changing your linked email on Binance is as follows: Log in to the Binance Official Website, go to "Account Security - Email Binding," click on "Modify Email," and sequentially enter the verification code from your old email + the SMS verification code + the 2FA dynamic code. Then, enter your new email and click "Send Code" to receive the verification code for the new email. Once all verifications pass, the re-binding is successful. The entire process takes about 5-10 minutes. After re-binding, the account will enter a 48-hour withdrawal cooling-off period (longer than the 24 hours for a password reset). During this time, all withdrawal, C2C selling, and fiat withdrawal functions are suspended to prevent hackers from immediately changing the email to their own and transferring assets after stealing an account. The Binance Official APP also supports changing the linked email with the same steps. If the old email is no longer accessible (e.g., corporate email revoked, email provider shut down), you need to go through the "Email Appeal" process, submitting identity documents for manual review, which takes 3-7 business days. For beginners downloading the APP, please refer to the iOS Installation Tutorial. Changing your email is a high-risk operation; it is recommended to read the full content of this article before proceeding.

When Do You Need to Change Your Linked Email?

There are 6 common scenarios for needing a change.

Scenario 1: Moving from a corporate email to a personal one. Many people registered with a company email in the early days and later worried that the email would be revoked after leaving the job, leading to account loss. This is the most common reason, accounting for about 60% of cases.

Scenario 2: The original email provider closes down. For example, certain service adjustments for local email providers or the shutdown of niche foreign email services. If the email can no longer be used, it must be changed.

Scenario 3: The email account is hacked. If your email password is leaked or you receive "login from unknown location" alerts, it is recommended to immediately switch to a completely new email to cut off the risk.

Scenario 4: Account consolidation needs. You have multiple Binance accounts and want to consolidate them under one primary email (Binance currently prohibits multiple accounts under one identity, so be cautious with this).

Scenario 5: Upgrading to an independent "Binance-only email." As security awareness increases, some users register an email specifically for Binance, separating it from daily use to reduce the risk of credential stuffing attacks. This practice is highly recommended.

Scenario 6: Email prefix change. A work email changed from [email protected] to [email protected]. In essence, these are different emails and require re-binding.

5 Essential Checks Before Re-binding

Before clicking the "Modify Email" button, be sure to complete these 5 checks to avoid failures or account anomalies.

Check 1: Confirm the new email hasn't been registered with Binance. Try to register with the new email on the Binance registration page. If it prompts "This email is already registered," it means the new email is already in use by another Binance account and cannot be used for the current one. You'll need to find an unregistered email.

Check 2: The new email can send and receive messages normally. Send a test email to the new address to confirm it isn't being filtered by spam, the storage isn't full, and the receiving delay is within a normal range. It is best to whitelist the binance.com domain.

Check 3: 2FA and phone are both working. The re-binding process requires a 2FA dynamic code and an SMS verification code. If either fails, the process will get stuck. Open Google Authenticator beforehand to confirm you can see the 6-digit code for Binance and ensure your phone has signal to receive SMS.

Check 4: No large transactions in the last 24 hours. Binance's risk control is particularly sensitive to the combination of "recent abnormal activity + email change," which might trigger a manual review extended to 24-48 hours. If you just completed a large deposit or withdrawal, wait 24 hours before changing.

Check 5: Currently not in a cooling-off period. If you recently modified your password or 2FA, your account is in a cooling-off period, during which you cannot change your email. Wait for it to end.

Web-based Re-binding Process (Detailed)

Step 1: Enter the email management page. Log in to the Binance official site, click the profile icon in the top right, and go to "Account Security." In the "Account Information" section, find the "Email" row, click "Modify" on the right.

Step 2: Old email verification. The system first requires verification that you own the current email. Click "Send Code," check your old email for the 6-digit code (pay attention to the anti-phishing code to ensure it's a real email), and enter it.

Step 3: Phone verification. Enter the 6-digit SMS verification code received on your phone. If you don't receive it for a long time, click "Resend." Binance limits this to once every 60 seconds, 10 times a day.

Step 4: 2FA verification. Enter the 6-digit dynamic code from Google Authenticator.

Step 5: Enter the new email. Fill in the new email address and re-enter it to confirm. Click "Send Code," go to the new email to get the 6-digit number, and enter it.

Step 6: Face recognition (for some users). Depending on the risk control score, you may be required to upload a 3-5 second liveness video. This is typically triggered for accounts with large balances or first-time email changes.

Step 7: Completion. The page will display "Email modified successfully," and both the old and new emails will receive a notification. From this moment on, all Binance notifications will be sent to the new email, and the old email is completely unlinked from the account.

APP-based Re-binding Process

The APP process is basically the same but more convenient. Open the Binance APP, click "Account" in the bottom right, enter "Security Center," find the "Email" item, and click "Change Email."

One convenience of the APP is that it can directly call up the email app to complete the copy-pasting of verification codes, reducing cross-device operations. Additionally, the APP has integrated face recognition, so you don't need to authorize web camera permissions.

Starting from Q4 2024, the APP supports a "cooling-off period waiver"—if you operate on a frequently used device, have a high risk control score, and have never logged in from a different location, you might skip the 48-hour cooling-off period through additional liveness verification. However, this is not guaranteed.

48-Hour Cooling-off Period Explanation

The cooling-off period triggered by changing an email is longer than for a password reset (48 vs 24 hours) because the email is the "root credential" for account recovery. The first thing hackers do after stealing an account is often changing the email. 48 hours gives the real owner enough time to notice the anomaly.

Status of functions during the cooling-off period:

Function Status
Log in to account Normal
Check balance Normal
Spot buying/selling Normal
Futures trading Normal (Profits/losses as usual)
Deposits Normal
Withdrawals to external addresses Suspended
C2C selling for fiat Suspended
Fiat withdrawals Suspended
Internal transfers Suspended
Modify email again Suspended

The cooling-off period starts from the moment the change is completed.

Appeal Process When Old Email is Unavailable

If the old email is completely inaccessible (forgot password + provider closed), you cannot verify via the standard process. You need to go through "Email Appeal."

Appeal Path: Log in to Binance APP → Bottom right "Customer Support" → Type "Email Appeal" or "Change Email" → Select "I cannot access my old email."

Materials to Submit:

  • Clear photos of both sides of your ID card (or passport)
  • A photo of you holding your ID card, with the document contents clearly readable
  • A recorded video saying: "I am XXX, ID number XXX, applying to change the email for Binance account XXX from old_email@XX to new_email@XX, today's date is XXXX-XX-XX," lasting about 15 seconds.
  • Proof of account ownership: Screenshots of trading records from the last 3 months, deposit/withdrawal addresses, materials from KYC certification, etc.

Review Time: 3-7 business days with complete materials. After approval, the staff will manually re-bind it to the new email, and it will automatically enter a 48-hour cooling-off period.

Security Hardening After Changing Your Email

After a successful change, immediately do these 5 things to harden your security.

1. Set an anti-phishing code for the new email. This is linked to the account, not the email, so it remains effective. But confirm it displays correctly in a test email.

2. Whitelist binance.com in the new email. Avoid Binance emails being marked as spam.

3. Enable independent strong passwords and 2FA for the new email. The email itself must be secure. Gmail+Google Authenticator or Proton Mail+Hardware Key is highly recommended.

4. Test receiving login alerts from the new email. Trigger a new device login to confirm the alert email is received.

5. Update the new email in your password manager. Change the email field for the "Binance Account" entry to avoid forgetting which one is linked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will changing my email affect my KYC status? A: No. KYC is tied to your identity document and face, not the email. The status remains unchanged.

Q: Will it affect my referral relationships? A: No. Referrals are tied to the account UID, which doesn't change.

Q: Can the old email immediately register a new Binance account? A: Yes. Once unlinked, it is idle. But remember, multiple accounts under one identity are generally not allowed.

Q: Why am I not receiving the verification code on my new email? A: Common reasons: typo in email, sent to spam, provider blocked the domain, or storage is full. Check these in order.

Q: Can the cooling-off period be lifted early? A: Usually not. In extreme emergencies, you can contact support, but it is very rare. Better to just wait the 48 hours.
